We cycled from our house May 5, took the Coho Ferry to Port Angeles and cycled around the west side of the Olympic peninsula. Then down the west coast to San Diego, arriving at the Mexican border June 12. 2900 km! Lots of scenic and enjoyable cycling, with the occasional difficult section.

Mostly we camped at hiker/biker group sites at State parks, hot showers and no reservation needed. We stayed in hotels a few times when the weather was bad and near San Francisco and LA. We flew back from San Diego to Victoria with Alaska Air, it was fairly easy to pack the bikes in Amtrack bicycle boxes for the flight. On average we cycled 80 km/day, some days 110 km. Those were long days on touring bikes.
Best section: Monterey to Big Sur! Longest downhill: 16 km on the Leggett hill. Amazing 32 km beach trail ride from Malibu to Redondo beach in LA.
No mechanical issues except replacing some brake pads. Oh, and pulling out three spokes from my front wheel.
It was early in the season, but we didn't have any rain until northern California. Much less traffic and cooler weather which we prefer. Overall a fantastic bike route!

We want to thank all the TWC members that donated to the Canadian Red Cross Nepal earthquake fund last year. That donation money was matched by the federal government and was used efficiently - fundraising costs were less than 5% of donations.
An emergency field hospital was quickly set up in Dhunche near Langtang valley, one of the worst hit areas of Nepal. Red Cross workers and volunteers also supplied emergency first aid, clean water, food and shelter supplies to 3 million people in remote areas. They continue to work to support local health facilities and rebuild communities.
